Our fishing industry is as when time began. Of course, it was not so high in standard, as today. Long before fishermen caught fish in the indian ocean, Our men caught fresh water fish in the Mahaweli Ganga, Kalu Ganga, Kelani Ganga and in the many water holes scattered throughout the island . Fish in those places contained a lot of blood and vitamins, unlike the saltwater fish of the sea,

The tasty loola, magura, weligowwa, theliya, koraliya and the kanaya enriched the blood of the sinhala race that produced the engineering wonders of the ruined cities and tanks. Today , Sri Lanka’s population has risen by leaps and bounds to 18 million and streams cannot supply the fish to feed these millions. So, sea-fishing on a big scale has been launched.

Rubber cultivation in sri lanka was started by the english. It is our second biggest revenue earner. Rubber is not a native of sri lanka. It is a native of south america. But it grows very well in the middle country of sri lanka. It too, needs plenty of water and sunshine. Many companies do rubber cultivation here because it does not pay very much to have it on small scale. most of the companies grow rubber on estates of over hundred acres. There is chemically produced rubber, known as artificial rubber, in other countries. but natural rubber is far superior to the artificially monufactured rubber.

We celevrate the sinhala new year festival. It is a national festival. sinhala buddhists and hindus celevrate it on the 14th of april. people prepare a lot to celebrate this festival . everybody is busy during this season . people wear new clothes on this day. they cook milkrice at on auspicious time. They eat milkrice at a good time . they also start work at a good time. These are sinhala new year rituals. relatives andneighbours meet each other. theyexchange greetings everybody greets each other according to sinhala customs . children offer betel to their parents and worship them. most buddhists visit the temple on the sinhala new year day. they offer flowers and alms in the vihara. we often heav the temple bells during this fetival.

Baseball is the most popular sport in the united states and is often called its national pastime. It’s a game played with a hard ball and bat between two teams of nine players each. In a baseball game the two teams take turns at playing. Each of these turns is called an innings and there are nine innings to a game. The play starts when a player called the pitcher from one tean throws a ball towards the batter , a player on the opposing team. the base ball game is very similar to a popular game called ‘ elle ” played locally.

I ts wings are usually held sloping over the back like a slanting roof. Caddis flies are shy [easily frightened] Creatures and are seldom seen except when they gather around bright lights, to which they are attractet in large numbers. The young of the caddis fly, the caddis worm or larvae are more interesting than the adults. These clever little creatures build long tuves of various materials in which they live in comparative safety.

The different species of caddis worms each use a particular type of material to build their houses, like small sticks and straw, shells, and stones. when the caddis worms is ready to change into pupa, it seals both ends of its home with silk, spends the necessany thime within, and then emerges as a full-grown caddis fly.

A long time ago a king called dhatusena ruled in Anuradapura, He had two sons named moggalana and kasyapa. kasyapa was younger than moggalana but he wanted to become king first, so he killed his father and became king. Moggalana was very, he wanted to kill kasyapa and become king. So kasyapa ran away from anuradapura and built a beautiful palace on top of a rock so that nobody could catch him and kill him. This rock was called sigiriya. He built many beautiful byildings on sigiriya and painted beautiful pictures on the sides of the rock. Even now we can see some of these pictures and some ruins of the buildings.

Sinharaja Rainforest.

The Sinharaja forest is the only undisturbed rainforest left in sri lanka. It is about 9000 hectares in extent. Many of the plants are very rare. Over 60% of the tree species are found only in the lowland wet zone of sri lanka. If these species of trees are allowed to get destroyed the world lose them altogether. so it is important that much effort is made to conserve this rich. valuable and fragile habitat. The sinharaja rainforest is the largest rainforest reserve in sri lanka.

In 1840 sin haraja became a crown property. In1988 the sinharaja was made a National wilderness area. In 1989 UNESCO included the sinharaja forest in the world heritade list. as the first national heritage of sri lanka. The sinharaja forest is home to many rare animals, birds, butter flies, insects, reptiles and trees, Ferns and mosses grow well as the climate is humid because of heavy rainfall.
